It is with a tremendous sense of loss that I write to tell you of the passing of my sister, Lynn O’Leary, on June 26th, 2011. Lynn graduated from Ascension in 1961.

She was better known back then as Ann Hurley.

Lynn was predeceased by her husband, Richard, her parents James (an ascension student) and Ethel, and her brother James Jr. (‘64). She is survived by 2 Ascension graduates, me (‘62) and her brother John (‘69), as well as, her sister Jacqueline,

her brother Robert,

and numerous nephews, nieces, and stepchildren.

Our cousin, Mary Zonneveld Scipione, died on September 16, 2011 after a long illness.

I’m not sure whether she graduated in  1950 or 1951.

She completed a masters degree in education at St. John’s University and taught in NYC and Seaford, NY.

She is survived by her brother Andrew Zonneveld, class of ’44, her husband Robert Scipione of Bedford N.H., a son John Scipione, Denver Colorado, a daughter, Ellen Scipione, Kansas City MO, 5 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She will be missed by all of us.

He was from 103rd Street and played ball at the YMCA

on 104th between Columbus and Amsterdam.

He was 77 years old.

His picture is in the Older Links, Groups,

one in Fort Campbell KY, taken in July 1953.

It is with heavy heart that I must report the passing of

Tom Coady-‘44 on August 11/11

Tom went to Ascension and lived on 106th.Street,

between Amsterdam and Columbus.

Tom spent two tours with the Marines: WW 2

and reactivated for the Korean Conflict.

He spent his whole working life in the brewing industry,

retiring from Budweiser around 1995 and retiring to Florida.

Tom is survived by his wife Doris and his sister.

Tom was a great guy. Remember him in your prayers

and maybe donate something to the

Ascension Scholarship fund in Tom's mane.

My sister, Patricia Quinn Sanders (Patsy) ‘58, died one year ago this past July

She had ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It was very aggressive and

she died within one yr. of being diagnosed.

Patsy leaves behind her husband Dennis, 3 children and 3 grandchildren.  Please take a moment to say a prayer for her and her family who miss her dearly.
We lived at 20 West 109th street, between Manhattan Ave. and Central Park. Patsy and I always talked about the old neighborhood and had many a laugh.

She and I graduated in 58, and our older sister Loretta Quinn Houlihan graduated in 56'.

The 3 of us went to a reunion there many years ago, and we got to see the old neighbors. What an opportunity!!

Robert Parker class 1941 passed away May of 2010 at his home in Baton Rouge La. His brother James class 1940 passed away a few years ago. There was an older brother Edmond (not sure of his first name) who was an engineer and made a great contribution to our radar system during the second world war. They were the sons of Mr.&Mrs. Parker who owned Parkers grocery store at

104 Street and Manhattan ave.

They lived at 60 West 106 Street top floor.

Joseph Raymond McClain ’44 passed away on

December  1, 2010. He was 80 years old.
Born and raised in New York City, he had lived in West Hempstead, L.I., NY until 1964 when he moved to the Indian Lake section of Denville, NJ.
Joseph served in US Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Airborne Rangers during the Korean War and worked as a crane operator for Union Local #14 in New York City for 40 years before retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Indian Lake Community Club, Past Commander of the Denville V.F.W. Post #2519

and he was a coach for Denville Little League.
He is predeceased by his brothers and sister Sonny, Rene, Jim and John, and also by his brother in-law Tom O'Grady.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Eileen M. (O'Grady) McClain ‘47. He is also survived by his loving children Kevin, Michael, Brian, Tim, Daniel, and Nancy McClain and families. He is also survived by 14 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren and his siblings Edward (& Eileen) McClain of Florida, and Evelyn (& Jim) Brawley of Westwood, NJ, and his brother in-law Leo (& Kathleen) O'Grady and sister in-law Alice O'Grady.

Thomas F. Murphy, 78, of Bradley Beach, formerly of Old Bridge, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Jersey Shore Univ. Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, Thomas grew up in Manhattan and the Bronx and later lived in Old Bridge before moving to Bradley Beach 13 years ago. While living in Old Bridge, Thomas was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, where he served on Parish Counsel, St. Vincent de Paul and the Holy Name Society. He was on the Old Bridge Township Planning Board. Thomas retired in 1993 from Con Edison in New York City, where he worked for 30 years. Most recently, Thomas was a parishioner of the Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach, where he was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and was on the parish council. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Bradley Beach. Thomas was very proud of his Irish heritage and served as the former president of the Friendly Sons of Shillelagh, Old Bridge and a trustee of the Jersey Shore Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh. He was on the committee for the Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade, and a former Grand Marshal of the parade. He was a member of the N.J. Irish Festival Committee.
Thomas was predeceased by his brother, Bernard Murphy. Surviving are his beloved wife of 45 years, Joan (Galvin) Murphy; three daughters, Marypat Jeffries and her husband David of Old Bridge, Sheila Murphy of Manalapan, and Dina Starace and her husband Edward of East Brunswick; a sister, Joan Murphy; and a nephew, Gregory McGrath and his wife Sharon. He also leaves four grandsons, Thomas and Jeremy Jeffries, Kyle and Ryan Starace; and his much-loved dog, Brandy.
Visiting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 14 and July 15 at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. She graduated from Cathedral High School, NY. She moved to Garnerville in 1964 where she made many wonderful friends. She was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society of St. Gregory Barbarigo. Ann attended Rockland Community College. She retired from the North Rockland Central School District where she worked for 27 years. She was a member of the Haverstraw Senior Citizens. Ann is survived by her loving husband, Tony, of 50 years, and their children. The family would like to thank their many loyal friends of the North Rockland Social Club and the community for their constant support.

Another member of the Ascension Alumni passed away last night.

Pat Murtha (Gurman), she was a great gal, full of fun.

Myself and Betty Butler use to go to Wildwood with Pat for five days in May,

and believe me she and her sisters, Ann and Kay, were a big part of the fun we had on that trip.

The Murtha Family, were fine people, one as good as the next.

I know Pat is safely home, and I hope she knows.

There are a lot of people who will miss her dearly.

The likes of her will never pass this way again.

there was a wake today and her family celebrated her life today.

My husband John J. Bernard ’41 died in June of last year.

He had suffered form Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

John J. Bernard, 81, of Titusville, NJ died Sunday at St. Frances Medical Center in Trenton, NJ.

Mr. Bernard, born in NY City, was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy as a Radar man 3rd Class on the USS Burleigh until honorably discharged in 1946. He continued as a Naval Reservist until leaving with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1979.

He resided in Brick, NJ until after the loss of his first wife, Patricia Bernard.

Moving to Titusville in 1993, Mr. Bernard is survived by his wife Sandra Cristofori, three children, and 4 grandchildren. He is also loved and remembered by his 3 stepchildren.

Mr Bernard graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in NY City, and received an MBA from Stern College, New York University. Over the course of his life he worked as a CPA for Peat, Marwick (KPMG), Vice President for Administration and Finance, Thomas Edison State College, and as a contract manager with the NJ Department of Human Services.

He also served with USAID in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

As a Certified Public Accountant, he was a member of AICPA.

Mr. Bernard was a parishioner at St. George Roman Catholic Church in Titusville.

My sister, Catherine (Kathleen or Kay) McHugh Brautigan, 1944

passed away on July 8, 2008 at the age of 78

Her husband, John J. Brautigan, a NJ resident all his life, passed away in February 2006.

 

My sister is survived by seven children and twenty grandchildren

ranging in ages from 6 months to 24 years.

She is also survived by four brothers, Thomas '42, Patrick '46, Bernard '48 and Peter. Also, three sisters-in-law:  Rosemary Mayol (Mrs. Bernard McHugh) and Yolanda Mayol (Mrs. Peter McHugh).  Rosie and Joey graduated in the fifties, but I don't know the exact years.  Tommy and his wife, Joan M. Bell McHugh,'44, live in Wall Township, NJ, Barney and Rose live in Dumont, NJ as does Peter and Joey.

It is with very deep regret that I inform Ascension Alumni of the passing of my mother, Mary Hennessy Trotta, (class of '48) on May 22, 2009.

My heart breaks as I write this, but I know she would want me to reach out to her old childhood friends and say "thanks" and "fond farewell!"

She always spoke so lovingly and fondly of her years in Ascension School and growing up in 910 and then later in 940 Amsterdam Avenue.

Mom loved attending reunions and chatting with old friends and neighbors from the upper west side. If you knew my mother, please take a moment and say a prayer for her....and for me.

Jackie (John) Scully died January ’09 in Arizona

I think he was class of ’47 or ‘48.

We all lived at 93 West 103rd across from Arden Theater

Thomas Devaney class of ‘41 on April 27 after a long illness.
He was predeceased by his two wives and is survived by three step children,

one son and one grand daughter.
